Twenty-Nine Days. Zero Restraint.

Embiid bluffs, a Giannis guarantee, and a commissioner reaching for the whistle. Five writers return with the receipts.

The room has receipts. League chat appears as league chat; NBA news links to its source. Draft advice and the writers' verdicts are opinions. No chat joke has been turned into an actual pick, trade, or league rule.

Lateef drafted in a room that wasn't open.

Chat receipt

ALL RISE FOR THE SEPTEMBER DRAFT THAT EXISTED ENTIRELY IN LATEEF'S HEAD. On September 15, Dr. Myles asked what time the draft was that night. The next day he announced he'd already taken Jaylen Brown. Aris arrived with an imaginary Joel Embiid. Mike called cap. Somewhere, an empty ESPN draft room wondered why it was catching strays.

For the record: these were chat jokes, not Ballers Only selections. The real draft is Sunday, October 18 at 6:15 p.m. The court recognizes Lateef's 2024 championship. It does not recognize his new calendar.

Motion to start the season a month early: denied. Set an alarm, champ.

The draft board

John put Embiid first. His escape clause went second.

Opinion

September 4, John jokes that Ben Simmons is his first-round pick because the preseason video looks good. By September 16, it's Embiid at number one, with a qualification: first in at least one of the leagues he's in. Beautiful work. The man created a first-round reach with a change-of-venue provision. He did not promise to take Embiid at ten in this league, and I am not giving him a fake receipt when the real one is this good.

ESPN's September 16 points rankings put Embiid 73rd. A ranking is an opinion, too, but John is proposing a considerable scenic detour. If this is bait for Lateef, fine. If it's the plan, I want the draft room recording.

I grade the pick you actually make. Your other league cannot testify for you.

Kawhi's file finally gets a closed stamp.

Official news + opinion

Toronto has officially acquired Kawhi Leonard. File the release. Our old July news snapshot carried the pending version; that file is now history. Mike's September 14 done-deal post finally belongs in the completed drawer, where a transaction can stop auditioning for the rumor column.

For your draft, separate the completed move from the price you're willing to pay. A front office can finish the paperwork while a fantasy manager is still negotiating with a highlight reel. I accept signed transactions at this desk. I do not accept nostalgia as collateral.

The stamp says completed. It does not say draft him at any price.

Minutes watch

Phoenix has minutes to argue over.

Official news + watchlist

Mark Williams has no return timetable after shoulder surgery. That puts a big circle around Phoenix on my preseason list. Oso Ighodaro and Khaman Maluach are the names to watch, not a promise that either becomes your bargain starting center. I want to see who starts, who closes, and who survives a second shift without the coach reaching for somebody else.

In a fourteen-team room, a late pick with an actual route to court time deserves attention. Put both names beside the exhibition box scores. Then move the one earning the job up your board. Do not spend the pick and ask which one he is afterward.

An empty chair is an opportunity. You still have to sit in it.

The long view

The trophy has better attendance than some arguments.

League history + opinion

Mike put the trophy back in the chat on September 18. A useful editorial decision. After weeks of NBA trades and preseason certainty, there was the thing everyone was supposed to be discussing.

The verified nameplates from 2024 through 2026 belong to Lateef, John, and Jamel. One each. Jamel carries the current title into this draft; everyone else carries an explanation. The picture requires less interpretation than the explanations.

The trophy remains wonderfully indifferent to who won the chat.

Commissioner's court

The commissioner has found the penalty whistle.

Chat receipt

MIKE SURIN HAS PLACED THE ROSTER ROOM ON NOTICE. His September 17 warning named suspect drops, promised fees for foolishness, and closed with the sort of language that does not usually appear in a welcome packet. The commissioner's preseason scouting report: somebody is going to try something.

This is a warning from the chat, not a published fine schedule. No amount or enforcement procedure is being invented here. If a formal rule follows, print the rule before anybody starts issuing imaginary invoices. Until then, the court suggests that every manager locate the difference between a clever move and a cry for supervision.

Your first defense should not be: I thought nobody would notice.

Guarantee department

Mike has already guaranteed the season. Convenient.

Chat receipt + opinion

September 14: Mike posts the Giannis-and-Bam gym clip, tells Lateef to draft Luka, calls this Giannis's year, and stamps it with a guarantee. I respect the efficiency. Training-camp optimism, rival draft advice, and a warranty from the same salesman.

We're talking about the NBA player here, Aris, so keep the Greek Freak team banner rolled up. As for Mike: if a workout clip can settle the season, send the league a thirty-second video of Brooklyn Kings winning the playoffs. I'd like to save everybody the trouble.

I have saved the guarantee. The return window closes when you start explaining it.

The fine print

The NBA brought an invoice. The chat brought a calculator.

Official news + opinion

The NBA's September 2 Clippers ruling imposed a $30 million team fine, stripped five first-round picks, and fined Kawhi Leonard $700,000. Those are the league's announced penalties, not numbers passed around on a meme. In JUST BALL, Janise questioned the punishment's bite and Mike called Leonard's fine peanuts. This room will audit an NBA sanction before it agrees on where to draft a center.

Here is the desk's opinion: the missing draft picks are the part a franchise keeps paying after the headline gets old. Cash clears. Empty future draft slots remain empty. Mike's separate Ballers Only roster warning has no connection to this NBA case, though the timing gave the newsroom two very different penalty departments.

Never let a large check distract you from the assets that disappeared behind it.

Draft market

Davion's price is moving. Keep your wallet still.

Reported trend + opinion

Rotoworld reported Davion Mitchell rising fifteen places in Yahoo draft position. Useful market chatter. It is not the Ballers Only board, and it is not permission to chase him another round because somebody else finally noticed the name.

My move: write down a price before the room starts selling the breakout. Watch his preseason role, compare the guards still available, and keep a second option. If the price runs past your line, wave goodbye. You are drafting a team, not proving that you read the sleeper article first.

The sleeper stops being cheap when fourteen people whisper his name.

The record room

Astoria Hoops have perfected the wrong part.

League history + opinion

Mike Petridis has gone 16–4 in consecutive seasons without a championship. It is an unusually tidy record of an untidy problem. The league knows he can build a regular-season winner. Repeating that fact for a third year would add remarkably little to the conversation.

Jamel beat Astoria Hoops 1,737–1,471 in the 2026 final. That is the score the October draft is supposed to answer. Petridis does not need a louder preseason or another certificate for punctual excellence.

The cabinet has room. The regular season has already made its point.

The main card

Fourteen chairs. Twenty-nine days. No imaginary selections.

League notice

THE REAL CARD IS SET: SUNDAY, OCTOBER 18, 6:15 P.M. Fourteen teams. Twenty-nine calendar days from this September 19 edition. Glass Factory opens the draft; Babycakes holds the turn. John sits at ten, where every speech about Embiid will be available for cross-examination.

Janise's August complaint about pick fourteen remains in the court file. The remedy is two consecutive selections, not a redraw. Aris and Dan share the third chair and therefore get twice the opportunity to blame one another. The draft board itself has made no statements and remains the most credible person in the room.

Bring a queue, charge the device, and leave September's pretend picks at the door.

Preseason pressure

Hiawatha's fresh start comes with a forwarding address.

League history + opinion

I love a fresh start. Hiawatha gets one every autumn, and somehow the mail still arrives in the basement. Four wins, fifty-six losses across the verified three-season window. The draft can reset the roster. It cannot persuade me I imagined the last sixty games.

Here is my challenge: leave October with a team you can explain without saying upside six times. Pick players you mean to use. Keep up with the roster. Make the rest of this room earn the joke for a change. I would happily retire this column if you stopped renewing its material.

Rebuilding is allowed. A permanent construction permit is getting embarrassing.

Camp watch

A camp invite is not a rotation spot, Knicks fans.

Reported news + watchlist

Lateef dropped the Knicks' camp-signing list into the chat and asked for opinions. Mine starts at the contract line: Rotoworld identified Bruce Brown, Ochai Agbaji, and James Wiseman as Exhibit 9 additions. That puts names on a camp list. It does not put fantasy points in your lineup.

Watch who survives the roster decisions, then who earns a repeatable role. Until that happens, this is scouting material. Nobody gets bonus points for drafting a player because the jersey matches the website. I work the wire; I do not run the souvenir stand.

Let the Knicks pick their roster before you pick their bench.

New business

The Lab gets a developmental contract. Ballers Only gets prime time.

Chat receipt

John has a smaller experimental league called the Lab. His September 7 pitch explored salary-cap drafting and keepers; Lateef told him to stay focused in here. The desk has reviewed the organizational chart. Ballers Only is the NBA. The Lab is where you get some reps, try a strange lineup, and hope the big club notices.

Experiment away. Learn what a keeper costs. Discover that you spent the budget too early. That is useful developmental work. It does not move the Ballers Only trophy, change this league's rules, or turn a Lab victory into a championship on the main stage. Bring the lessons back. Leave the minor-league parade on its own bus route.

The Lab can develop the prospect. Ballers Only decides whether he can play.

JUST BALL · Sept. 7; John confirmed the Lab's experimental, secondary status on Sept. 19. NBA/G League comparison is editorial banter.

Closing column

September has never lost a matchup.

Opinion

The month supplied a phantom draft, a qualified first-pick declaration, a Giannis guarantee, and a commissioner already preparing to discipline the future. This is a league approaching peak preseason form. Everybody's plan still works because nobody has been required to submit a lineup.

The interesting part comes later, when the opinions acquire owners. A player taken too early belongs to somebody. A warning becomes a ruling. The trophy picture becomes the score a challenger has to beat. Until October 18, confidence remains the only commodity this room can produce without limit.

Enjoy the undefeated record. It is currently shared by fourteen teams.
